Do you often find yourself lacking attention? Or do you find it incredibly difficult to focus while studying? Or does reading a book makes you feel sleepy immediately? Or do you lack the motivation to finish your regular exercises, such as swimming, yoga, or cardio? Well, all the above problems can be because of lack of concentration. And this ‘lack’ can be because of several different reasons as well. It can be because of our addiction to the social media, virtual reality, gadgets, wasting time, partying habits, bad company, no friends, et cetera. But how can you improve concentration? - that is the important question. The following points might be of help -

  • Eliminate distraction - the first way to improve concentration to is reduce the amount of distraction you face everyday. To begin doing so, you can cut down the time you spend on social media, or attempt to do other tasks, such a reading, or writing, or solving puzzles. It will be difficult initially, but gradually you will feel distanced with your distractions, and ultimately, the distractions will not be distractions anymore.
  • Meditation - Meditating or practicing mindfulness activities can strengthen well-being and mental fitness and improve focus. During the meditation process, our brain becomes calmer and our whole body becomes more relaxed. We focus on our breath during the process so that we will not be distracted by our minds. With practice, we can learn to use our breath to bring our attention back to a particular task so that it can be done well even if we get interrupted.
  • Get plenty of sleep - Sleep determines a significant percentage of our distracted state. If our sleep is not fulfilled, we feel lethargic for the entire day, and it limits our concentration. To prevent this, you should always get plenty of sleep, and save yourself from tiredness. Make sure you go to bed on time, and wake up on time too. If you suffer from any sleep disorder, consult a doctor, or try using essential oils which will benefit your sleeping pattern.
  • Walk with Nature - Research has found that even having plants in office spaces can help increase concentration and productivity, as well as workplace satisfaction and better air quality. Finding time to take a walk in the park or appreciating the plants or flowers in your garden can boost your concentration and help you feel refreshed.
  • Listen to music - the music you like, it’s not only good to boost your mood, but also good to improve concentration. Research has found that listening to the music we like is associated with improved meditative powers. So go now, its time for you to make a playlist!
  • Don’t spend a lot of time on a single task - often, when we feel distracted, its also because we spend a lot of time doing a single task. This makes us feel bored, and disconnected, which further limits our concentration. To prevent this, switch between tasks. Don’t spend a lot of time completing one task, try to multi-task.
  • Take a break - your lack of concentration can also be because you are emotionally exhausted. Often, we don’t see signs of emotional exhaustion, because we mistake it for our day-to-day stress. Look out for such signs, and if necessary, take professional help. A clear mind helps concentrate better.

Happy Health!
